**If you would prefer to participate in a special early literacy program just for babies (age 0 to 24 months), ask at the Children's Reference Desk for the "Summer Babies" reading program.
Step 1: How the Program Works - Important Things to Know
Program Overview
The goal of the summer reading program is to encourage children to explore the world of books and discover the joy of reading while at the same time practicing and improving their reading skills by promoting summer reading. Children who finish the summer reading program will have read or been read to a total of 16 hours. Those children who finish the program early also have the option of continuing to read by choosing to become a "ravenous reader."
Using the Reading Record to Track Reading
Paw Prints:
School-age children will color in one paw print for every 15 minutes of reading or being read to. (Preschool parents: if you prefer, you may let your child color a paw print for every two books read rather than keep track of minutes.)
Children may read anything, including books, comic books, graphic novels, ebooks, or magazines. Items read do not have to be checked out from the library. All reading counts.
Time spent listening to audiobooks may also be counted as time spent reading.
Time spent interacting with the electronic books in TumbleBooks and BookFlix also counts. (TumbleBooks and BookFlix may be accessed via the library's webpage.)
Pet Food Dishes:
When you come to one of the pet food dishes, you have a choice. You can do any one of the following and then color the pet food dish:
- attend any program offered by the Children's & Youth Services Department,
OR
- do one of the activities listed on the back of the reading record,
OR
- read for 15 minutes.
Pet Picture:
Each time you come to a pet picture at the end of a path, you have earned a prize. Bring your reading record to the Children's and Youth Services Tech Desk at the library when you are ready to collect one or more prizes.

After every four (4) hours of reading, you will earn a prize.
1st prize: Dog Bookmark and a Food Coupon
